The major languages that are being studied in this project are as follows:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Buddhism
- Hinduism
- Judaism
- Shintoism
What makes each of these religions universalizing or ethnic?
Christianity is a universalizing religion because it is found all over the world. It also has an appeal to people without limits to where they live. This makes the religion have more followers than ethnic religions.
Islam is a universalizing religion because there are 1.3 billion people who claim that Islam is their religion. These people are spread throughout the world, so it clearly tries to appeal to all people, no matter where they live.
Buddhism is a universalizing religion because is has nearly 400 million adherents. These followers are mostly found in China and Southeast Asia. Because this is a very large area, it is considered a universalizing religion.
Hinduism is an ethnic religion because it is a very concentrated religion. While it has 900 million adherents, they are nearly all found in India and Nepal.
Judaism is an ethnic religion because it only has 14 million adherents. Two-thirds of them are living in Israel or the United States. Judaism is also closely related to two of the three major universalizing religions, Christianity and Islam.
Shintoism is an ethnic religion because it is found nearly only in Japan. There are very few shrines and followers outside of Japan, so it is now heavily followed world-wide. It was also only spread orally for a very long time, so it was only spread to family members, such as young children.
